Welcome to GYRATION:a tribute to the golden age of Russian literature |
|
The Golden Age of Russian Literature may well be the
height of world literature. Nineteenth century Russia gave us what is
arguably the greatest novelist of any time (Fyodor Dostoevsky) as well
as the (mostly) undisputed best novel ever written (War and Peace by
Tolstoy). Writing of suffering and redemption, this era begat
literature as we know it today. This site will cover the
achievments of the greatest luminaries of this era. Many of these works are now in the public domain, it has become timely to put them in a format which can be consumed over the internet. It is to this goal that this site is dedicated. In the coming days, weeks, and months this site will grow to include works by the luminaries listed below. For this to happen it will take hours and days of editing and layout. I am deeply satisfied to bring my personal love of this genre to a broader audience. This is a journey that I look forward to, I hope that it is as beneficial for you as it has been--and continues to be--for me. Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin (1799-1837): Considered to be the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809-1852): Russian writer of Ukranian descent often referred to as the father of modern Russian realism. Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883): Russian novelist and playwrite. Fyoder Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881): Russian writer, perhaps the best novelist ever known. Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910): Russian writer, pacifist Christian, and educational reformer. He is the most well known of the authors who make up this period in Russian literature. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904): Russian author and playwrite. Some would place him outside the Golden Age. I have also started a blog for posting my progress as I update the site, so check that out if you want to know what is going on. |
